In fact, she took silver and crushed Tonya who was actually a better skater and went home in 8th place. A new movie called I, Tonya features her side of the story, her life growing up, the scandal and the aftermath.
Her life has been nothing but troubled ever since she was a small child growing up in a poor and abusive home. From sex tapes, to boxing, and even a very short music career, Tonya has tried it all. Her current role as mom is her favorite. She said she is just like every other mom, and a good mom at that. She gets up at 7 am with her son and makes him chocolate milk and pancakes.
Hard to imagine after what we uncovered about her over the years, but it seems the role of motherhood suits her. Growing up Tonya began skating at the young age of three. As the only child in her family to her mom LaVona Golden and her fifth husband, Alan Harding you would expect her to be spoiled with love and attention. Sadly, this was not the case. Her mother was verbally and physically abusive. Whether that played a part in her orchestrating the attack on Nancy is unclear.
But if your mom repeatedly pushed you down the stairs, beat you with your hairbrush, and refused to let you use the bathroom while skating, you may be a little nuts too! Fear is a powerful force in getting people to do some really messed up things. She claims she wanted to come clean, but he stopped her by threatening her with her life, and brutally attacking her. Regardless of what she did, the fact that she endured so much abuse is tragic.
The movie I, Tonya paints her as an unfortunate victim to her environment. A victim of men, a victim of her parents, and husband. That she was forced into the attack on Nancy by her abuser and forced to stay with an abusive husband by the skating committee because it would better her career. But her career took a sharp turn in the wrong direction following her role in the attack on Nancy.
Banned from skating and losing her income and career, she was desperate. Facing financial hardship, as well as public scrutiny, she did what any respecting woman would do. Wait…no respecting woman would do that! It seems that was the year for headlines for Tonya and Jeff.
They were either in them for the attack or showing off their true colors in another way. I wonder what she regrets more? Her marriage produced nothing but pain and hurt for her and those around her. The public hated her. And the only thing she had ever wanted and known was now gone forever. She had to do something. In she started a band called the Golden Blades but during their very first event in Portland, Oregon they were booed off stage. Her music career ended quicker than it started.
The outrage and anger were still far too raw. Her musical career will not however, be going down in history as anything to speak of. In fact most would call her a criminal, a sore loser, an angry woman. Pretty much anything but hero. But there was one very lucky 81 year old woman who was fortunate enough to have Tonya walk into a bar one day. She just so happened to collapse and stop breathing. Tonya, who went to the bar on a whim, went over and performed mouth to mouth recitation on her, saving her life.
She claims the woman was basically dead for two minutes, and she was able to bring her back. The owner of the bar, Kim Ip confirmed her accounts and said she was so glad she was there that day. Not long after, she became a professional boxer. It seems like a crazy turn of events from figure skater to boxer, but with the financial problems still plaguing her, she needed some way to make money.
Everyone wanted to see the new Tonya Harding and what she could do in the ring. Her name drew in a lot of hype and attention but she lacked the skills needed to be a good boxer. And beginning a boxing career at the age of 32 is a bit too old to start. Rap songs about the attack:
